Hollow Woods (2025)

For String Sextet (11.5’)

Written for Tyler Shropshire

Hollow Woods explores themes of memory and the passage of time. A tree in a dense forest stands as a witness to the years unfolding. The seasons change, with snow covering the ground, which eventually melts away to reveal the warmth of spring. Baby birds hatch in their nests, learn to fly, and seek partners to continue the cycle of life before eventually passing away themselves. Wildfires blaze through the forest, destroying much of the existing life, but this destruction makes way for new growth later on. Over the years, the tree observes it all producing internal rings and hollows that record its extensive memories, even as it gradually fades into the realm of memory itself.
